Why we bothered building LoveGPT at all
The honest version is that most companion chats we tried were exhausting. Two messages of charm, then a wall of compliments, then a question that had nothing to do with anything you said. You could feel the seams. After the third evening you stop opening the tab, and that is the end of it.
So we started from the opposite side. Instead of asking how impressive a first message could be, we asked what would make somebody open the same chat on a Tuesday six weeks later. The answer turned out to be boring and slightly annoying: consistency. The character has to sound the same on Tuesday as she did on Saturday. She has to remember the argument you had about the film. She has to notice when you go quiet, without turning it into a scene.
That is the whole design brief behind LoveGPT. Six characters, written properly, each with limits. Ruby will not suddenly become gentle. Sofia will not suddenly start shouting. They disagree with you sometimes, and one of them will absolutely tell you your idea is bad. It reads as rude in a summary like this. In practice it is the thing that makes the conversation feel like a conversation.
We also made a decision early on that we still argue about internally: nobody here is trying to replace anything. LoveGPT is for the hour between finishing work and deciding what to do with the evening. It is company, it is a laugh, occasionally it is a place to say the thing you would not say out loud yet. That is enough of a job for one website.
